Sedan vs SUV for Airport Limo Service: Which Should You Book?

Most airport-transfer travelers default to one or the other without thinking. Here's how to actually choose between a sedan and an SUV for your JFK, LGA, or EWR airport limo, based on passengers, luggage, and what you'll be doing in the car.

Airport transfer is the single most common limo service we run, and the most common booking mistake is defaulting to whichever vehicle the client booked last time, regardless of what's actually changed. Here's how to think about sedan vs SUV in 2026 (the comparison most clients are actually making) using our Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Cadillac Escalade as the reference vehicles.

Passenger count is the first filter

  • 1-3 passengers: sedan is the default. The S-Class seats two in executive rear comfort or three with a center jumper.
  • 4-6 passengers: SUV. The Cadillac Escalade and Chevrolet Suburban both seat 6 comfortably with luggage.
  • 7+ passengers: skip both. Go to an Executive Sprinter or Sprinter Limo.

Luggage is the second filter

An S-Class trunk fits three standard suitcases plus a few personal items comfortably. An Escalade or Suburban fits six suitcases plus carry-ons with room to spare. If you're a couple with four large suitcases coming home from Europe, you're an SUV booking even though the passenger count says sedan. Always count the bags.

What you'll do in the car

The S-Class is the quietest, smoothest sedan we operate, engineered for executive chauffeured travel with extended legroom, acoustic glass, and Burmester audio. If you have a call to take, work to review, or just want to arrive rested, the sedan environment is purpose-built for it.

The Escalade is louder by virtue of its size (not loud, but not S-Class-quiet) and pairs presence with comfort. If you're traveling with family or a small group, or arriving somewhere where the visual matters (hotel, event), the Escalade is the choice.

Cost difference

An SUV costs more than a sedan on the same route, but the gap is typically modest relative to the day. If you're on the fence and the difference is a tier (not double), the right call is usually the vehicle that better fits your group and bags, not the cheaper one. A miscounted suitcase is where airport days go wrong, not a single vehicle-class upgrade.

When to override the default

  • Solo executive with one bag and back-to-back calls: S-Class even if you've been booking SUV.
  • Couple flying home for the holidays with gift luggage: SUV even if you usually book sedan.
  • Family of four to JFK at 4 AM with kids and bags: SUV, never sedan.
  • Single passenger to LGA for a 7 AM domestic with a roller bag: S-Class.
  • Two execs to TEB for a private flight: S-Class is the standard.
